The Ninth

The occult sciences and esotericism were hugely popular in Petersburg around the end of the nineteenth century. On tour, British medium Olivia Reed arrives in the Russian Empire's capital and draws large crowds to her public spiritualistic meetings. A series of unexplained ritual murders occur in the city during this time. Girls are kidnapped on the streets, and their mutilated remains are discovered throughout the city. Rostov and his aide Ganin, a young police officer, are leading the inquiry. Things are growing increasingly perplexing with each additional victim. Suspicion leads Rostov to Olivia, and he chooses to approach her in the hopes that her real or imagined power to conjure the spirits of the dead will assist him in catching the killer.
